Spirituality and Psychology

by Rev. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer

The fields of psychology and spiritual direction share much in common, and thus should not be seen as mutually exclusive disciplines or fields of study.  Accordingly, this Spring 2004 list presents a collection of books that belong to the integrationist perspective.  The works of Gerald May are featured in particular, in honor of his newest book coming out this month.  I would recommend them as interesting choices for people who want to deepen their appreciation for spiritual journeying.

Please feel free to check out the dozens of books listed in the sections above.  For your convenience (since many of these books may not be readily available in your local bookstore), I have directly linked each book to its page at Amazon.com; just click its title and you can order in no time! Spiritual Journey Press is an associate of Amazon.com.

Please note: the books presented throughout the web site represent a variety of perspectives.  When a book receives a recommendation on this web site, it means that it is significant and well-written, and not necessarily that I agree with everything the author states.

The Dark Night of the Soul : A Psychiatrist Explores the Connection Between Darkness and Spiritual Growth by Gerald May

The publication of Gerald May's newest book (publication date: February 4, 2004) is the reason for this month's theme.  Of course, the "dark night of the Soul" referred to in May's title comes from the classic mystical work from St. John of the Cross.

Care of Mind/Care of Spirit  by Gerald May

Book Description from Amazon.com: "Although secular psychology addressed a great deal about how we come to be the way we are and how we might live more efficiently, it can offer nothing in terms of why we exist or how we should use our lives," writes Gerald May in this classic discussion of the nature of contemporary spiritual guidance and its relationship to counseling and psychiatry. For millions turning for answers to the world of the spirit, May shows how psychiatry and spiritual direction are alike, how they complement one another, and how they ultimately diverge."

Addiction and Grace by Gerald May

Book Description from Amazon.com:  "Here is Gerald May's brilliant and now classic exploration of the psychology and physiology of addiction. It offers an inspiring and hope-filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy."

The Lived Experience of Group Spiritual Direction
by Rose Mary Dougherty (Editor), Monica Maxon (Editor), Lynne Smith (Editor)

About the Editors (from Amazon.com):  Rose Mary Dougherty, S.S.N.D., holds an M.A. in spiritual theology from St. Louis University, and a certificate from the Shalem-Washington Theological Union's graduate program in spiritual guidance. She is the author of Paulist Press title Group Spiritual Direction: Community for Discernment. Monica Maxon holds a Master's degree in theological studies from Virginia Theological Seminary. She edits the Shalem News and helped edit Living with Apocalypse: Spiritual Resources for Social Compassion. Lynne Smith is a member of Shalem's board of directors and is a participant, facilitator and mentor for facilitators of group spiritual direction at Shalem Institute.

Book Description (from Amazon.com):  These moving, positive essays witness the experiences of participants in Shalem Institute's group spiritual direction workshops. Each author relates what he or she learned as a member, mentor or facilitator of a spiritual direction group--a community gathered together to seek and share a desire for God in communal silence, dialogue, intercessory prayer and discernment--and adapts it to a specific setting--the family, workplace, congregation, seminary, the homeless. The result is this collection--a loving, gentle testament to the power of spiritual direction groups--that enables young and old, clergy and laity of all faiths to realize, celebrate and proclaim a commonality of greater spiritual purpose.  Fluid and well-honed, The Lived Experience of Group Spiritual Direction is of great value to seminarians, graduate students, church organizations, clergy and laity of all faiths, as well as to anyone seeking guidance on the value of group spiritual direction. It features biographies of its numerous contributors.

Now, the classic which really started the dialogue between psychology and spirituality:

The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature, Centenary Edition by William James

Book Description (from Amazon.com):  "Commemorating the 100th anniversary of "the most influential book written on religion in the twentieth century," Routledge will proudly publish a major new edition of William James's turn of the century classic.  Paving the way for all modern spiritual thought, The Varieties of Religious Experience was revolutionary in its view of religious life as centered not within the Church, but solely within the person. James, a vivid, subtle stylist writing for the skeptical, nonspecialist reader, was the first to define spirituality as "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude." In this edition, scholars Taylor and Carrette bring a new understanding to James's life and his determination, in the cold, scientific face of the Industrial Revolution, to reaffirm the power of individual belief.  One hundred years after its publication James's work remains even more vital than before. Beyond its influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, beyond its influence on launching the American pastoral counseling movement, and beyond its role in spawning the psychology of religion, it remains a book that empowers individuals and inspires readers with erudition, insight, and kindness.  No discussion of current religion - from the fundamentalist revival to the New Age movement - is complete without an appreciation of this groundbreaking work."
