Rekindling The Inner Fire 40 Day Devotional Series

Edited by David Hazard

Early Will I Seek You : A 40-Day Journey in the Company of Augustine
How can I know God? How can I find His purpose for me, in all of life's tangled ways? How do I break through to Him in prayer, when my way seems blocked? These pressing questions, common to so many, sent Augustine on his own spiritual journey toward the heart of God.  Among the best-loved of all Christian expositors, Augustine (354-430 A.D.) struggled to find the true path to God, amid heresy and threats of persecution and destruction. Yet in all his works there shines a heart set on one goal to become a friend to God, and Him alone. His written words, treasured for centuries, are footprints to be followed to the kind of life that finds God.

A Day in Your Presence : A 40-Day Journey in the Company of Francis of Assisi
How can I live free from the cares of this world? Can I live as a citizen of God's kingdom when I'm burdened by the everyday cares of home and family, finances, pressures at work? Is it really possible to be wonderfully free and alive in Christ? Francis of Assisi discovered how to live as a citizen of heaven and the joy that changed his life shook the world! And now you can follow the path, in spirit, that set Francis on a journey into the deep love of God.  Cherished as a spiritual troubadour, a saint for the whole Church, Francis (1182-1226) became Europe's shining light in a time of utter spiritual and political darkness.

Majestic Is Your Name : A 40-Day Journey in the Company of Theresa of Avila
Jesus offers us deep wells of peace, freedom, and joy "rivers of living water" from within. Then why do we feel wrung out by life and spiritually dry? Is there really a faith that "overcomes the world?"  Theresa of Avila was caught in a cataclysm of spiritual tumult and social change not to mention pain and threats of her life. Yet she found the way to victory over circumstances by following Jesus, who is "the Way" to God.  In one of the church's darkest times, Theresa (1515-1582) vowed to live for God alone.

You Set My Spirit Free : A 40-Day Journey in the Company of John of the Cross

John of the Cross (1549-1591) was one of the brightest spiritual lights of the dark and tumultuous 1500s. His teaching led thousands to inner freedom from "the dark night of the soul" the state of spiritual blindness in which most of us live our days, unaware that God is right beside us, in love, in freeing power. Through great opposition and danger, John taught countless men and women how to find freedom in the Spirit.

Mighty Is Your Hand : A 40-Day Journey in the Company of Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray (1828-1917) accepted the challenge to take the light of Christ to an area of Africa known for its "wild dogs and wilder men." In the midst of personal weakness and physically grueling work, he was soon attacked by liberal church leaders who wanted to stop the true life of the Spirit from spreading. In the center of this opposition, Andrew discovered the new "fire" from heaven that ignited dark hearts and destroyed spiritual strongholds. The spiritual strength can be ours today as we surrender ourselves to be swords of power in the hand of God.

Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions and Death's Duel
by John Donne

Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions and Death's Duel, one of the handsome series of Vintage Spiritual Classics, contains a rich collection of extraordinary writings.  The introduction explains the situation of both Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions--written in 1624, when Donne was feeble with a fever that doctors believed might kill him--and Death's Duel--Donne's final sermon at St. Paul's Cathedral, preached only a month before his death at age 59.

The Mystical Sense of the Gospels: A Handbook for Contemplatives
by James M. Somerville

Ingram: "This book helps readers pray and meditate as Jesus did. It opens up the gospel text so that one can see their mystical meaning. When Jesus speaks about hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, of seeking first the kingdom of heaven, he is talking about the contemplative path. "The Mystical Sense of the Gospels" is ideal for everyone interested in "praying always".
