Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger, Choosing God, Chosen by God.  This is an encounter with the thoughts, convictions, life and faith of Cardinal Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris and one of the most articulate and intriguing voices in the Church today.  In a wide-ranging and in-depth interview, Lustiger--a convert from Judaism--provides insights into his own life as well as answering many spiritual questions.  Consider also these other books by Lustiger: Dare to Believe: Addresses, Sermons, Interviews, 1981-1984 and Dare to LiveWhat led me to highlight Lustiger's books was a chapter in Elie Wiesel's newest autobiographical installment,  in which he recounts his friendship with Lustiger.  It inspires me to hope that one day Jews and Jewish believers in Christ might find friendship and reconciliation.  Lustiger just retired in February 2005.

Teresa of Avila
by Cathleen Medwick.  Cathleen Medwick's impressive biography of Saint Teresa (1515-1582), widely considered one of the greatest mystics and woman reformers of the Renaissance.    Medwick is Jewish, and despite the religious differences between her and her subject, she does justice to the saint's life and journey.

The Life of Teresa of Jesus : The Autobiography of Teresa of Avila
by St. Teresa of Avila, E. Allison Peers (Editor)

This is Teresa's own account of her life journey and ministry, and it is considered a classic in the history of Christian autobiography.

0385494181_m.gif (12571 bytes)The Holy Longing by Father Ronald Rolheiser.  You have to admire a Catholic priest who opens a book on Christian spirituality by discussing the spirituality of Mother Teresa, Madonna and Princess Diana!  Rolheiser seeks to help people who don't understand the Christian vision of spiritual life by employing non-technical language.   He sees the soul as human energy expressed in our world, and from this foundational concept develops a positive theology of life while not neglecting the dangers of temptation (sexual and otherwise).  It's worth a reading.

Essential Monastic Wisdom : Writings on the Contemplative Life
by Hugh Feiss

This book provides hundreds of quotations describing three essential concerns of Benedictine life: "Ordering Time and Place," "Character," and "The Good Desired and Possessed." Concrete expressions of each concern are further organized into collections of quotations with headings such as "Hospitality," "Discernment," "Longing," and "Love," making Essential Monastic Wisdom an extremely useful resource for readers seeking inspiration and guidance in many essential aspects of spiritual life. Medieval Writings on Female Spirituality (Penguin Classics) edited by Elizabeth Spearing.

Book Description (from Amazon.com):  "Biographies, poetic compositions, works that are mystical, prophetic, visionary, or meditative: the selections here reflect the developments in medieval piety, particularly in the link between female spirituality and the body. Included are the dramatic visionary writings of Hildegard of Bingen; letters and poems by Hadewijch expressing passionate love for God; and Marguerite Porete's allegorical poem "The Mirror of Simple Souls," a dialogue between Love and Soul that was condemned as heretical. Also included are biographies written by male ecclesiastics of women such as Christine the Astonishing, whose extraordinary behavior included being resurrected at her own funeral; revelations received by Bridget of Sweden, the first woman to found a religious order; and excerpts from The Book of Margery Kempe, in which Margery imagines herself as a servant caring for the Virgin Mary in her childhood.  Elizabeth Spearing holds a D.Phil. from the University of York.  She translated Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love for Penguin Classics."

Models of the Church by Avery Dulles

One of America's leading theologians defines the basic functions of the Church, assesses its mission on Earth, and explores its many different roles in the lives of believers.  I initially read this book in the 1980's, and this revised version adds an addition model to consider.

Spirituality@Work: 10 Ways to Balance Your Life On-The-Job
by Gregory F. A. Pierce, Mark D. Hostetter

"Inviting us to pause, reflect and act with the God who is already present, Gregory Pierce boldly confronts and honestly evaluates our struggle to find meaning in the workplace.  Unlike books that try to impose religion on the world at work, spirituality@work promotes an authentic spirituality that is rooted in the nitty-gritty of the workplace." The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage by Paul Elie

This large book (over 500 pages) chronicles the journeys and writings of Thomas Merton, Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day, and novelists Flannery O'Connor and Walker Percy.  Their relationships are also chronicled.
